Tai Chi Classes

Tai Chi Chuan doesn't fit neatly in any conventional category. It's a martial art that's more about psycho-physical health than about combat. It's a meditation technique that uses the relationship between autonomic and conscious posture and movement control rather than the relationship between autonomic and conscious breathing control as a means of self-revelation and exploration. Its ancient reputation has been that it makes it's practitioners strong, supple and wise. In modern times it's on the well worn road to becoming a product and so perhaps becoming genuinely extinct. The real thing needs a few years of effort to experience. That's why there is so little of the real thing to be found.

I have some experience in several martial arts and sports (karate, aikido, judo, fencing) and other systems (yoga, zen meditation, Alexander Technique). I had the good fortune to be introduced to Cheng Man-ching and studied with him for three and a half years in the late 60's and early 70's. Since then I've taken classes with three of his senior students (Ed Young, Ben Lo and Liu Hsi-heng). I have permission to teach from Ed and Ben. In addition to teaching in the clubs listed below, I accept students for private or small group classes.
